The legal age for driving in South Africa is 18 and while some car rental companies at Johannesburg Airport rent to drivers this age most require that the renter has held their valid and unendorsed driver’s license for a minimum of at least 1 year, and some for as long as 3 years. If they allow younger drivers to rent it might be a requirement that the renter has their own private insurance with full coverage of the rental car.

Driving in South Africa means not talking on the cell phone/mobile phone, wearing a seat belt at all times and carrying their driver’s license while driving, all in accordance to South African laws.

All renters will be required to provide their driver’s license, a credit card and a passport (if international driver) in their own name at the time of collection of the rental car. Additional drivers will usually be required to be present at the time of rental to provide their documents and to sign the rental agreement.
